Tone practice

How to practice for your tone quiz on Friday (listening):

Step 1: Write down the sentence you see on a piece of paper.
Step 2: Click on "HERE" and listen to the tone for the sentence. Listen three times each and write down the correct tone mark (keep in mind the 3 rules of tone mark placement)

Course Description:

            This course provides a foundation for learning Standard Mandarin Chinese. Based on the textbook 跟我学汉语 Gen Wo Xue Hanyu I (Learn Chinese with Me I) and several other commonly used high school Chinese textbooks, this course introduces basic Chinese grammar and phonics. Chinese culture is an integral part of this class. Reading and writing are limited in scope and guided through the use of learned vocabulary and language structures. By the end of the course, students learn to write 120-130 characters and recognize 200 characters. Students will also be able to understand, converse, read and write about simple everyday topics.



Textbook(s): There is no assigned textbook. Students will be given instructor-made handouts and worksheets. Students are only responsible for material provided by the teacher.

Assessment/Evaluation Procedures:

Students will be evaluated on homework, class participation, quizzes, tests and projects.



Late work policy:

  • Students are responsible for making up all work missed during an excused absence.
  • Following an excused absence, students should complete any missing homework assignments and/or class work within a week after returning to class.
  • After returning to school from an excused absence, students must schedule to make up any missed quizzes or tests within a week.
  • With the exception of excused absences, homework assignments are due on their due dates. 20 points will be taken off for each class period the assignment is late.
  • Students with special circumstances that prevent them from completing homework assignments should speak to Meng Laoshi before class.



Classroom Expectations:

  1. Students should respect the teacher and one another
  2. Students should be punctual and come prepared to class
  3. Students should actively participate in all classroom activities
  4. Students should not eat, drink or chew gum during instruction (water bottles are okay)

Homework Guidelines:

  • Punctuality: Bring the assignment the day it is due. Meng Laoshi will only accept work that is completed in full.
  • Identification: Your name, date that the assignment is due must be on the paper that you turn in.
  • Legibility: Write as neatly as possible. Character sheet grades are based on both completion and accuracy.



Materials Needed:

1.      One 1” three ring binder

2.      5 subject index divider 

3.      Index cards for making flashcards

4.      4 dry erase markers (dark, easy to see colors—red, blue, black, green. No yellow or light green please)

5.      One composition book for additional character writing practice



Useful tips for learning Chinese:

  • Keep a well-organized binder. Keep all handouts, notes, worksheets and characters sheets in their place.
  • Spend at least 15 minutes daily reviewing new characters and words for recognition
  • Practice tones. Record yourself or practice with a friend who is also taking Chinese.
  • Check the class website at least once a week.
  • Keep updated with Chinese current events.

Jeff 今天很不好。他很不舒服。他昨天看diànshì ,他的头疼。他天打diànwán ,他的眼
睛和手疼。他昨天和女朋友打篮球,他的膝盖和腿很疼。他还有哪里不舒服? 他的肚子和
也疼。他去医院看医生。医生说Jeff 该吃一点药,也该擦一点药。休息几天就好了。



Jeff is not well today. He is very uncomfortable. Yesterday he watched TV and his head hurts. Yesterday he played video game and his eyes and hands hurt. Yesterday he played basketball with his girlfriend and his knees and legs hurt a lot. Where else is he uncomfortable? His stomach and back also hurt. He went to the hospital to see the doctor. Doctor says Jeff should take a bit of medicine, he should also put some ointment on. Rest for a few days and he will be will.

Passage 2:
今天星期日,九点十八分,我起床。九点半,我和妈妈吃早饭。
十点我穿衣服。我穿蓝色的裙子和黄色的鞋子。鞋子很舒服。我也戴帽子,帽子是白色
的。我不带眼镜。 
十一点我和朋友逛街。我们十一点零七分吃饭。
午下雨。三点二十九分我和弟弟学习德文。三点半不下雨了。我和弟弟打篮球。

Today is Sunday, at 9:18 I woke up. At 9:30, my mom and I ate breakfast. 
At 10:00 I got dressed. I wore a blue dress and yellow shoes. The shoes are comfortable. I 
also wore a hat, the hat is white. I don't wear glasses.  
At 11:00 my friend and I went shopping. At 11:07 we ate a meal. 
In the afternoon it rained. At 3:29 my younger brother and I studied German. At 3:30 the rain
stopped. Younger bro and I played basketball.  
At 6:00 at night my family at dinner. At 9:00 I want to go to sleep, but I should study German. 
Tomorrow I don't want to go to school, I want to watch TV.

Melissa 很高也很,她十五岁,从中国来。她现在住在 NewOrleans。 她家有四口人, 爸

Melissa is tall and skinny. She's 15 years old, from China. Right now she lives in New 
Orleans. She has 4 people in her family, dad, mom, little sister and her. In Melissa's family, 
her little sis Joyce is the tallest, dad is the skinniest, mom is the meanest, Melissa is the 
smartest.
